SIA EXPOSITION DETAILS...
Our annual two-day SIA tradeshow will take place July 23-24 at the Colorado Convention Center. Exhibitor applications are coming in very early this year so please check the updated floorplan daily to see what booths remain available and secure your booth soon. Booth selections will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis.

OSHA Directorate Of Construction To Address SIA Attendees in Denver...
On Tuesday, July 22, you will want to be in attendance to hear keynote speaker Mr. Steven Witt address the SIA and its guests. Witt is the Directorate of Construction for the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The Directorate consists of three offices: the Office of Construction Services; the Office of Construction Standards and Guidance; and the Office of Engineering Services. Mr. Witt has had an enormous role in not only helping SIA form its new Alliance with OSHA, but has been extremely supportive and helpful in assisting SIA with our growth and outreach across the country over the last year. He will discuss his role with OSHA and how it relates to scaffold and access safety, amongst many other items.

SIA GOLF TOURNAMENT INFORMATION...
The exciting SIA Golf Tournament is returning once again this year, and will take place on one of Colorado's finest courses. Arrowhead Golf Club will host course this year's tournament on Monday, July 21st. Shuttle transportation will be provided to and from the course originating from the Denver Marriott City Center, and green fees include time on the driving range, cart and lunch. Train the Trainer Workshop...
July 25-26, 2008 Friday (8am - 5pm) & Saturday (8am - 5pm) This is an intensive 16 hour course, and is a hands on approach to the improvement of teaching and learning skills. The "Train the Trainer" is facilitated by Maureen Orey M.Ed., CPLP, SIA Director of Training & Education. Participants will review basic ideas about training, check current practices, and become familiar with the SIA Training Program content. Participants will be encouraged to try new instructional strategies and techniques within the safe environment of a group setting. In this workshop you will have an opportunity to: · Understand the importance of effective instructional skills · Practice a variety of training tools and techniques · Recognize the importance of establishing a positive learning environment · Use learning objectives to inform learners of expectations and intentions · Understand the different learning styles of participants · Write useful and practical lesson plans · Identify common instructional media and resources · Become familiar with the SIA Training Program content and processes

SIA Suspended DVD Now Available...
We are pleased to present the newly revised Suspended DVD for purchase. The Suspended Council has spent countless hours on this project and should be commended for their efforts. Cactus States Chapter Meeting Update...
The Cactus States Chapter of the SIA held its regular monthly meeting on April 2, 2008 at Tempe’s Claim Jumper restaurant. A report was given by Howard Schapira of Action Scaffold on the progress of the chapter starting its monthly presentations at all the different contractor association’s monthly meetings. The first presentation will be at the American Subcontractors Association Arizona Chapter’s meeting and will be on supported scaffold. As part of the SIA’s new Alliance with OSHA, the local OSHA office will also provide a representative at each monthly presentation. Carroll Mumford of Southwest Safety Training Alliance made a presentation to the Cactus Chapter regarding their required training for multiple worksites and how the SIA could work with them for instructors on the scaffold training. Elouise Schultz gave a membership report and distributed brochures and DVD’s that members could use to help bring in new members and she challenged each person to bring a potential contractor member with them to the next meeting. New officers were elected as follows: David Lanza with PCI will serve as Chapter President, Roger Shepard of Integrity Scaffold will serve as Vice-President and Leni Failoni of Action Scaffold will serve as Chapter Secretary. The next meeting will be 11am on Wednesday, May 7th, 2008 at Aunt Chilada’s restaurant in Phoenix.

OSHA Alliance Updates...
John Ball, group managing director of Height for Hire, Ireland, was elected president of the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) at its Annual General Meeting on 15 April. John Ball succeeds Andrew Reid of SGB Mastclimbers. He will serve a two-year term and advance the objectives of the federation to promote the safe and effective use of powered access around the world. Addressing members at the IPAF Summit, Ball commended his two immediate predecessors, Andrew Reid and Pierre Saubot of the Haulotte Group, for the significant growth in membership and training in the past five years. He thanked Andrew Reid for the strategic decisions made during his term and for handing over the federation in a strong and healthy position. As part of OSHA's efforts to keep Alliance Program participants informed of OSHA’s compliance assistance and outreach resources, OSHA is providing a fact sheet entitled “Effective Workplace Safety and Health Management Systems” This fact sheet highlights how effective safety and health management systems can reduce workplace injuries and illnesses, reviews the critical elements of effective safety and health management systems, and provides a listing of OSHA resources to assist employers with developing and improving safety and health management systems. These resources include OSHA’s Safety and Health Management Systems eTool, Small Business Handbook, and Compliance Assistance Quick Start. The fact sheet also features a checklist of action items for each element of a safety and health management system.
